A Million Years of Love

This art project is an effort to document the who, what, why, and how of our love. It’s based on my idea that even though human beings have only been in existence for the last 200,000 years, there are now almost 7.5 billion of us. With so many people loving life and each other, on any good or bad day, we are all actually surrounded by a minimum of a million years of love. Thanks to all the participants, friends and strangers alike.

Kathryn

katherine

Kathryn: I've traveled, settled, searched, and loved every step of my journey that has led me to who I am today - an avid foodie, composter, and gardener. With every seed I plant, I think of its own delicious journey in becoming the fruits and veggies that will eventually nurture myself and the community around me. It has been over four years that I've worked with the non-profit Garden School Foundation, and I still look forward to every seed that comes my way.

Gilesy

Gilesy

Gilesy: My art is my passion. Back home in Jamaica, my father taught me how to carve when I was 5 years old. I feel that learning to carve is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. In fact, I don’t call it carving, I call it my heart.

SameSource:

samesource

SameSource: Love is not finite. Our capacity to love is not finite.

Flora and Jason

*Flora and Jason

Flora: After experiencing a bad relationship, I learned what I don’t want. That education has made me more certain about the right relationship. My mother told me when a man really loves you and wants to be with you, he will plan your future together -- with all the details.  Jason did that for me. He’s younger than me, he’s my fan boy!

Jason: When I met her, there was no fear. I was more than sure that I had a future with her. For a guy like me, it’s hard for me to express my feelings. Maybe it’s cultural, maybe it’s my education, maybe it’s because I’m a nerd but I feel I have confidence when I’m with Flora.

Santa and his Elves

santa claus and his elves

Santa Claus: This time of year is my favorite, it brings out the best in people. What I love the most are all the smiles on all the faces.

Elf #1: The way Santa presents Christmas here in the neighborhood is magical. It’s Christmas wrapped up in a huge heart of love.

Elf #3: Give them love, give everybody love!

Rebecca and William

They didn’t eat fast food. They raised all their own food.

William and Linda

William & Linda

William: I think what makes our relationship work is that the foundation of our marriage is God. We don’t go to bed angry, we don’t call each other negative names. We share our time, talent, and abilities with each other. Whatever we’re doing, we stay a couple.

Linda: We respect one another and don’t take each other for granted. We stay away from the negative area. We’ve been married 16 years, this is our 16th wedding anniversary!

Bryan

Bryan

Bryan: I write a lot about love. Love comes in many ways to many people. As a writer, I try to encompass love in all its forms and express them through my music. I refer to my guitar as a female and I feel like whenever I engage with her, my heart opens up to send and receive love.

Edmond

Edmond

Edmond: I love being outdoors and working out. To be honest, I do love the attention I get from women but women get intimidated by the way I look. Dating is difficult because women don’t want to go out with me. I’m a good man and I want to fall in love. I know she’s out there somewhere. And, no, I don’t care if she works out or not!

Mikayla

Mikayla

now THAT’S [living].

Medran

Medran

Medran: I was incarcerated for 4 years. When I got out, I didn’t have any opportunities. Homeboy Industries gave me a job right away. I receive a whole lot of love and kinship from Homeboy. We bake bread together. Most everybody working there is from a rival gang. We didn’t have anything to do with each other and now we love each other.

Smoking helps me with my pain, depression, and anxiety. Now that it's legal in California, I don’t smoke to get high anymore.

Milka and Eli

Rich

rich

Rich: I love street art/graffiti. I find creating it therapeutic, it’s a way for me to meditate and express myself.

Homeira

Homeira

Homeira: There is no greater love that is given than the love of family. What I love best about the definition of “family” is that there isn’t one single correct meaning of the word. Every family is different; they can consist of two dads, two moms, adoptive parents, etc., but at the end of the day, what matters is the unconditional love and support they provide.

Ryan

Ryan

Ryan: Live to love and you will love to live.

Turner

Turner

Turner: There’s nothing I love more than being able to clear my head each day and get a good workout in.

Lawrence, Corey, and Dominic

Lawrence, Corey, Dominic

Lawrence: Life is love.

Corey: Love is the ocean.

Dominic: Love is being in the ocean with your brothers.

Virlean

Virleon

Virlean: I have so many loves. If I go in order, my first love is love of God. Second is love of family and friends. Third is that I’ve always loved children but I never knew how much until I started working in the cafeteria at school. I love the children, the freshness of their minds and their innocence. No matter what I’m doing I feel I have a positive affect on them.

Stephen

Stephen

Stephen: In this crazy busy life, the greatest love a parent can give their children is their time.

Trish

Trish

Trish: Today's culture uses the word LOVE to mean enjoyment or intense attraction. I think genuine love involves commitment and kindness. I find it's not hard being married. It's hard being HAPPILY married, doing the work needed and keeping the commitment of never giving up. It's using kind words regardless of the circumstances, like when your teenagers are being jerks, when your partner is sick or selfish, when your parents are aging and crazy. It's putting others before yourself. It isn't just an emotion. To me, love involves decisions and actions.

Marco

Marco

Marco: I love getting out on the water at 6:15 in the morning and watching the sun come up. It makes me feel like I’m living life to the fullest.

Wenjing

Wenjing

Wenjing: I love food. It’s not just about surviving, it’s about caring. For example, when my mother prepares diner for the family, she does it with love. Watching her do this over the years made me fall in love with cooking too. When I’m far away from her, when I cook, I feel that she is with me.

Brother JD and Lil Wonder

Brother JD

Brother JD: Love is the answer to most questions. It does no harm, it does no wrong.

Lil Wonder: I love Wonder.

Erika

Erika

Erika: I love traveling. I love meeting new people and learning about new cultures. What I love the most about traveling is finding a new little piece of myself wherever I go. The biggest piece of me will always belong to my home country, Italy.

Alfredo

alfredo

Alfredo: I love being an elementary school principal. It allows me to work with children and be a support to others. Children are the most precious commodity in any society. They not only represent our future but also our hope for a better world.

Jasmin and Maegan

Jasmin and Maegan

Jasmin: We met in cosmetology school and immediately became best caring loving friends. Our book is open and we help each other write it. She lifts me up and hears me out.

Maegan: I can trust Jasmin with anything. We constantly laugh!

Dave and Randi

Dave and Randi

Dave: We’ve been together for forty years, we have two sons and a granddaughter. What makes our relationship work is that we never ask what makes our relationship work.

Randi: My husband is a good and creative man. He gives me my own space to be myself. His creativity is very entertaining.

DeAndre

DeAndre

DeAndre: When I think of love, I think of loyalty. Cream Soda is my best friend -- he’s the creamiest, he’s the dreamiest.

Cole

Cole

Cole: I love my parents because of the feeling of security they give me. They’ve always kept a roof over my head and allowed me to grow up in a safe environment.

Jasmine

Albert

albert

Albert: Crossword puzzles give me peace of mind. I’m a recovering alcoholic and these are my new addiction. They give me a feeling of peace and love and that feels great.

Elliot

elliot

Elliot: I love having the freedom to spend a sunny summer morning on the beach with my kids. So many around the world never get to enjoy this simple pleasure.

Mark and Shelly

Mark and Shelly

Mark: I play in a band and I noticed her taking photographs of us. The moment I saw her I wanted to meet her but she played hard to get. I stalked her for two weeks and finally got a date. I asked her what were some experiences she would like to have in her lifetime. One of those experiences was skydiving.

Shelly: I wasn’t sure about him in the beginning so I took it slow. We went out on two dates but on our third date, he surprised me and took me sky diving. That’s when the love began. We’ve been together for three years now.

Bruno

Bruno

Bruno: As a Frenchman, when I think about love, I think of the exquisite pain of loving someone so much that you cannot have. Being in love with someone or something which may not even exist makes it a dream and a dream stays perfect and never fades. On the other hand, another love that can last forever without fading is the the love of your family and friends.

Michelle

Michelle

Michelle: This is my son’s and my dog. The love of my son makes me feel full and invincible.

Adrian

Adrian

Adrian: Skateboarding gives me hope. It’s freedom. You’re in control. I do it for the love of flowing freely.

Indy

1 Indy

Indy: Music is my way of expressing myself -- a universal language connecting people from wakes of life no matter their background, language, or ethnicity. It’s the ultimate manifestation of love and positivity.

Linda and Erica

erica and linda

Linda: What comes to mind when I think of Erica is family. We’ve been friends for 9 years, we love each other.

Erica: Linda has a good ear. We have fun, it’s authentic. This makes me feel secure.

Alex

Alex

Alex: Even though I was raised in America, I wanted a Filipino wife, I’m the only male son and I felt a responsibility to my family to carry on the family name and bloodline. When we got married I found out how little I knew about the Filipino culture. My humor is different, that caused some problems but we’ve now been married for 22 years and have 3 kids. We raise our kids with Filipino values. I don't know what’s going to happen, my son likes redheads!

Kelly

kelly

Kelly: I work with children with special needs and for them, peer acceptance is not a given. When it happens, it’s a wonderful and noteworthy gift for all the children involved. It’s a demonstration of love. We, as adults, can watch and learn from them.

Mark and Shea

1 mark and shea

Mark: Before Shea was born, I used to sing to his mom’s belly. In the hospital, just an hour after he was born, I was alone with him and he began to cry. I started singing the song I used to sing to him and he stopped crying and looked at me. That’s when I fell in love.

Shea: My dad and I have a really close relationship. When I’m down, he’s always there for me. When I try to repay the favor, I can’t always do it because I can’t stop looking at him. My dad is my role model, I love him.

Elias

Elias

Elias: I love boxing, I love the way exercise makes me feel.

Elisa

elisa

Elisa: Love is when your home is another person, not a place.

Bennett and Jared

bennett and jared

Bennett: We’ve been friends for more than 15 years. It’s very comforting and pretty incredible to see how much someone can change and grow, and know that no matter which way it happens, there’s unconditional love there.

Jared: I think we have a lot of humility. I’m finding that the relationships and friendships without humility burn bright and die fast.

Vlad, Bairma, and Milana

1 Vlad and Bairma

Vlad, Bairma, and Milana: We are originally from Russia but we have now lived in the U.S. for one year. We love, Russia, the United States, positive people, the smell of the beach, and we really love good food!

Jon

jon

Jon: The reason I got Charlie Boo was because I was so depressed. My mom had just died and I wanted something in my life that I cared about. In these last 15 years he has given me unconditional love. He is a part of me.

Silvia

Silvia

Silvia: I love the feeling of romance. The right partner makes me feel complete.

SSG Ledbetter

SSG Ledbetter

SSG Ledbetter: I enlisted on August 26, 2001, two weeks before 9/11. The reasons I serve in the U.S. Army are that I want to make a difference, serve my country, and uphold the Constitution. I love being a part of something bigger than myself.

Walter

walter

Walter: I hope you have a sunny holiday
I hope there’s a king-sized bed in your bedroom
I hope you find your size on sale
I hope your nail polish lasts almost a week
I hope you find your balance
I hope you find free Wi-Fi when you need it
I hope you lose weight eating
I hope you fall in love again

Tenley

Tenley

Tenley: Love means hearts.

Brad

brad

Brad: Love? Being an actor and a comedian some say that I am in love with myself. Like many performing artists, the love of my work has become my lifelong mistress. However, for almost a decade I was in a relationship with a wonderful girl who understood my need to be creative and free. Even though she is now happily married to a great guy, we are still the best of friends. When I think of love I think of many pleasurable and selfish things...when I think of “true love” I only think of her.

Marjorie

Marjorie

Marjorie: It’s very gratifying to have a positive affect on a child’s health because then we improve their entire life. I’ve received lots of love from children over the years and this keeps me young.

Carlton

Carlton

Carlton: I believe love overtakes everything. It overtook me when my children were born. They come into this world not knowing anything. Whether I feed them on time, late, or early, they still love me the same.

Mark

Mark

Mark: My grandmother gave me a record when I was 9. It was “Hot Lips” by Henry Busse, recorded in 1938. It was fun music. I loved it so much that now I’m a collector of 78 rpm records recorded between 1895 - 1960. I own between three and four thousand 78’s. Listening to the music transports me to a different time. I don’t mean to sound nostalgic, there’s no living in the past, but listening to music of the past makes me think there’s hope for the future.

Bryan

bryan

Bryan: Seadra and Charlotte are my immediate family unit and they are the most important thing to me. I love nothing more than to spend time together as a family. Sometimes, our most enjoyable moments are unplanned -- where we can all just be, three individuals who are free to be individuals, yet can come together organically for connection. Right now, Charlotte does not want to take a photo. Why? Because the only thing I’m asking from her in this moment is to take a photo. She can be so photogenic, and yet she knows that this is the only thing I want here and now, so therefore, she’s rebelling with all her might. This is the nature of my relationship with Charlotte! Ha!

Natalie

natalie

Natalie: I’ve been with my high school sweetheart for almost 8 years, the most tumultuous years of my life. My family had to move from our apartment to my grandparents house and I wasn’t accepted into the college programs I wanted. I went through a bit of a depression. My sweetheart was very supportive of me through it all. He made me feel that everything would be okay. I hope everyone will find someone to make them feel all will be okay.

Erin

erin

Erin: I met Lincoln when he was 4 weeks old and it was love at first sight. I’ve had him for seven years now. He’s been with me through breakups and moves across several states. He is my constant. He keeps me grounded and focused.

Sage

sage

Sage: Love is everything. If you live your life based around what and who you love, then you will always be fulfilled. If you don’t, then you will always wonder.

Shaye and Airom

shaye and airom

Shaye: What makes a partnership work for us is mutual respect, admiration, and values. You want your partner to be as happy as you, as you want to be happy with them -- you behave in a way to make that happen. Also, unless you love the way the other person smells, and can tolerate the bad smells, it will never work. Olfactory compatibility is essential.  And a complementary sense of humor: laugh, laugh, laugh.

Airom: Our love is the combination of all loves. Protective, intimate, friendship; the ultimate of all loves. It is contained and fulfilled.

Allan

allan

Allan: Confusion is the emotion that seeds creativity, and nothing creates confusion more than love.

Betsy

betsy

Betsy: My son is adopted. People see that as being different from a biological child. As far as love goes, it’s no different at all. The thing that makes me the happiest is looking at his face.

Mahagnie

mahaganie

Mahagnie: Love is like tasting pizza for the first time.

Kevin

kevin

Kevin: Love doesn’t necessarily have to be specific to romantic love or familial love. What pets and animals help us appreciate is love in the broader sense about our connection to people, animals, our environment, and our responsibility to and for each other. Respecting a pet’s dependence on us reminds us of our interdependence with the planet. One thing Arrow taught me is to slow down and not be impatient when he sniffs a bush or listens for critters.  He taught me to look more deeply at the world as they do, to appreciate the smaller things.

Monica

monica

Monica: I think people are always looking for love. Love is not just about finding the right person, love comes from every little thing that makes you feel happy and appreciated. In my opinion, love is making something good for someone else without asking for anything in return, just because it makes you feel good.  We are human beings we are made of love and we survive thanks to love.
